Statii de metrou in Bucuresti

Opera Introduces Fraud Protection : PhishTank

For the Opera users some new features in their browsers - the browser deals with the phishing problem.
Phishing is a form of online fraud in which a malicious party convinces users to visit a forged Web site. That site is designed to mimic a trusted site in order to trick users into divulging personal information, credit card numbers, or bank account details. According to PhishTank, the month of November alone saw more than 9,628 unique phishing attacks. Since most phishing sites are taken down quickly, only real-time protection holds the key to consistent safety.
Firefox and IE introduced this feature a long time ago, I don't know what is the way these browsers are detecting the "phishy" sites, but I think that the user should pay attention anyway where and how he gives his personal information.
About this PhishTank you can read more on the Opera site.

Defend a planet

It's a little game that I played several times. You have a ship that's flying around a planet and shut the invaders, it is a little planet, some kind of little prince of Exupery planet. Not such a great game, but it is entertaining.

Post your high scores in comments, I past over 3*10^6 easily, and you?..

Internet can help you to convert a file

Sometimes you need to convert a file and you don't know what utility would help you to do that. A word document must be send to a friend and he cannot see it, make a pdf file and send it. Or your mobile phone supports only specific formats of audio files, take a mp3 file and convert it to the format you want. And for that you will need only an Internet connection (for bigger files you will stay longer and it depends on your connection speed too). There is a page - Media Convert - that convert files for free (max file size is 50 MB, but I don't think you want to upload and download a file bigger than that). It is easy an useful, it is always available (if you'll need a little tutorial on how to convert a file, see it here).

New on Google Earth: Panoramio and Wikipedia

In the morning, I was looking for a shorter path for my travels, and I sow these little white circles with an blue x on them on the map, and some gray ones. (You should see them too if you see a right part of the map - peek a city that may contain something interesting - and if in the layers panel the Geographic Web is checked).
So the x-circles are from Panoramio and the grey ones are from Wikipedia. (they are like the sites favicons - those that appears in the address bar before the site url).
Let's what the gray icons can do:
It retrieve informations from Wikipedia and show it in Google Earth, I found it nice.
The Panoramio little circles are nice too, you can see a picture of that place the circle is.
But the bes way to see it is in Google Earth. Find some time to watch it.

Windows Vista UltimateWhat sould can do the new OS on your computer? If you want this new OS be Windows Vista, you'll find some information about the product and its versions in the new ExtremeTech article. Depending on where do you use it you can choose a home edition or a Home Edition(Basic or Premium), or a Enterprize/Business edition. All the features are included only in the Ultmate Edition, but from my own experience, I know most of the times users are disabling some of the features, so maybe you don't want them all and you better choose an other version, I don't know yet about the behavior of this OS on 32 or 64 bits, but soon we'll found out.

Is that bad for you?

Beer quells heart disease and chocolate staves off cancer? Though often tagged with a disclaimer, studies that tell us to eat, inhale and generally indulge in "bad stuff" is music to our ears. So go ahead and enjoy these bad-for-you remedies—everything in moderation, as they say—until the next study inevitably overturns the research.
10. Beer -
The newest bad kid on the block, beer has long been overshadowed by its healthier alcoholic cousins. While no one's suggesting you switch that glass of antioxidant-rich Pinot Noir for a tall glass of lager—there's still that beer gut to worry about—new research has suggested that moderate beer intake can actually improve cardiovascular function.
9. Anger -
If you're one of those people who tends to bottle things up, only to explode ... don't hold it in so long. Studies show that bursts of anger here and there are good for the help, and can be an even more effective coping mechanism than becoming afraid, irritated or disgusted. However, is best in moderation: stay angry for long periods of time and you'll be plagued with a host of health issues, like blood pressure, sleep disorders.
8.Coffee -
unrelated studies claim coffee is a major source of antioxidants in our diet and can help lower your risk of diabetes. Something in the beans is also thought to ease the onset of cirrhosis of the liver and pancreatitis, good news for those who like to party hard all night before their morning caffeine boost.
7. LSD -
In heavy drinkers, small doses of LSD have been thought to help bypass the rock-bottom stage of alcoholism and prevent relapses. These studies—some decades old—were done in closely monitored, clinical settings; many patients haven't had a drink in the many years since. It's an interesting finding that needs a lot more investigation, and not a remedy that should ever be tried at home.
6. Sunlight -
Sunlight suppressed the immune reactions that cause asthma in some lab studies with mice and could be used to treat humans afflicted with the disease in the future. And sunlight—even if indirect, such as on a shaded porch—is known to boost the mood. Extra sunlight can help office workers avoid afternoon drowsiness, a recent study found. There's still no excuse to head outside and bake, however.
5.Maggots -
They're creepy, slimy and altogether ooky, but maggots can save your life. These squirmy larvae are science's newest wonder-cure and were approved in 2003 as the Food & Drug Administration's only live medical device. Placed on serious wounds, maggots mimic their "wild" lifestyle and munch on bacteria and dead tissue, stimulating healing and helping to prevent infection.
4. Marijuana - i
s a way to stave off the ultimate form of memory loss—Alzheimer's. Recent studies on mice suggest that anti-inflammatories found in the drug prevent the clumping of brain proteins, one major cause of the disease. So when should you start preventative therapy?
3.Red wine -
has long been known to have potent anti-cancer and artery-protecting benefits. The key, some studies indicate, is an antioxidant found specifically in the skin of red wine grapes, called resveratol. The latest studies even link resveratrol to greater endurance, a reduction in gum disease and Alzheimer's. White wine, which is fermented after the skins are removed, is less beneficial according to some studies.
2. Chocolate -
prevent certain cancers and keep your arteries from clogging. The most recent news? These powerful chemicals may even increase blood flow to the brain, warding off dementia. Just stick to the highest cocoa content possible—the bars packed with sugar don't help your health one bit.
1. Sex -
benefits of it go beyond immediate, ahem, gratification and satisfying the goal of procreation. Besides the obvious evolutionary purposes, we can all take pleasure in the news that having sex is an easy way to reduce stress, lower cholesterol and improve circulation throughout the body. As if you needed another excuse.

New York - not so expensive

[did you know..?]
In 1970 Fred Lebow
organized the first New York City Marathon, which was run entirely in Central Park with only 127 participants. Lebow used his own money (300 dollars) to purchase prizes for the first ten people to cross the finish line. In 1976 the Marathon was re-routed to travel through the streets of all five of New York's boroughs. The race now attracts more than 30,000 runners each year, and is supported by major corporate sponsors.
Lebow envisioned the New York City Marathon as a race for everyone -- men and women of every color, creed and country, regardless of ability. Each runner seeks his or her own goal -- whether to win, to achieve a personal best, or simply to finish.
Lebow served as president of the New York Road Runners club from 1972 until his retirement in 1993, after which he was feted by Mayor Giuliani at a Gracie Mansion reception. Under Lebow's direction the NYRRC instituted programs and events which popularized running and helped provide a safe atmosphere in Central Park. The NYRRC flourished and became the largest running club in the world.
The sixth of seven children, he was born Fischel Lebowitz in Arad, Romania on June 3, 1932. In his youth he hid from the Nazis and later fled from the Communists, making brief stops in England, Ireland, Czechoslovakia and other European countries before settling in the United States. After moving to New York City, Lebow embarked on a successful career in the garment and textile industry.
To honor Lebow's vision and work Daniel Mitrovich created the New York City Marathon Tribute Committee and commissioned this sculpture. This life-sized bronze sculpture depicts Fred Lebow (1932–1994), who is best remembered as the founder of the world-renowned New York City Marathon and longtime president of the New York Road Runners Club.

Critical Firefox hole allows password theft (IE - FF | 1 : 0)

Vulnerability lies in browser's Password Manager software

A flaw in Mozilla Corp.'s Firefox browser makes it easy for cybercriminals to steal user information on Web sites where users create their own pages, such as MySpace.com.

The flaw lies in Firefox's Password Manager software, which can be tricked into sending password information to an attacker's Web site, said Robert Chapin, president of Chapin Information Services Inc. For this attack to work, attackers need to be able to create HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) forms on the Web site, something that is allowed on blogging and social networking sites.

The attack was used in a MySpace phishing attack reported in late October. In that attack, users registered a MySpace account named login_home_index_html and used it to host a fake log-in page that exploited the flaw.

This page sent MySpace username and password information to another Web site, and MySpace users who visited the page using Firefox could have easily had their information compromised, said Chapin.

Firefox developers rate this bug critical, according to an entry in the project's Bugzilla database.

The flaw arises because Firefox's Password Manager does not perform a thorough enough check when it is deciding whether to send password information, and then does not ensure that password information is being sent to the server that requested it, Chapin said. In the MySpace attack, for example, Firefox would check to see if the form was coming from the MySpace.com domain, but did not make sure that the password information was being sent back to a MySpace server.

"From a programming point of view, this is almost like a typo," he said. "Ironically I think that's why it hasn't been discovered until now. It was just way too obvious."

Chapin has posted an analysis of this type of attack, which he has dubbed a Reverse Cross-Site Request, as well as a demonstration of how it works.

Microsoft Corp.'s Internet Explorer (IE) is also susceptible to these type of attacks because, like Firefox, it does not ensure that password information is being sent to the same server that requests it, Chapin said.

But IE is less likely to be tricked because it does a more thorough job in checking to see where the log-in form is coming from before it automatically submits password and user information, he added.

You need to protect your computer? You may do it for free...

While viruses remain a threat to our precious data, you need not necessarily invest in expensive antivirus scanners - there are plenty of free options available that may give even some commercial vendors a run for their money.
Free Online Virus Scanners (run inside the web browser to scan your hard drive - but they'll ask you t install a little activeX, or a java application, you should allow it to be scanned)

  • Trend Micro HouseCall - allows you to remove detected infections. Works with Firefox and IE. Requires Java.
  • McAfee Freescan - prepares a list of infected files and links to information about the viruses on your computer. It also gives you an option to clean your system. Requires IE with ActiveX.
  • Windows Live OneCare Scanner - scanner from Microsoft that cleans your system from viruses and also recommends ways to improve the overall performance.
  • Symantec Internet Security - can detect most virus threat but there is no option to delete the virus infected file or repair it. Does not examine compressed files. Requires IE with ActiveX.
  • BitDefender Online Scanner - scans your system's memory, all files, folders and drives' boot sectors - the default options automatically cleans the infected files. Requires IE with ActiveX.
Free Anti Virus Software for Windows
  • Avast! Home Edition - One of the most popular antivirus software, can also be run from Explorer context menu. You can either scan the entire hard drive or selected folders.
  • AOL Active Virus - based on Kaspersky Antivirus. The software can be configure to check only new and modified files thereby reducing the memory requirements. Also support scanning of incoming and outgoing email messages.
  • ClamWin Virus Scanner - An opensource antivirus software that is great for running routine antivirus checks on your PC. You need to manually scan a file in order to detect a virus or spyware.
And don't forget to install a firewall, the one from Win XP SP2, is pretty good, but you can use Zone Alarm, or Sygate Personal Firewall.
Have a healthy computer!

[NEWS]Vietnam produces human H5N1 vaccines in labs

A Vietnamese vaccine institute announced it has successfully turned out 5,000 doses of H5N1 vaccine for humans in labs, Vietnam News Agency reported Wednesday.

The vaccines produced by the Nha Trang Institute of Vaccines and Biological Products in central Khanh Hoa province have yielded good results after being tested on white mice, guinea-pigs and cockerels. They have been sent to Vietnam's National Institute of Verification of Vaccines and Biological Products.

Nguyen Thi Minh Hien, who is directly involved in the vaccine research, said the institute will produce another 5,000 doses of the vaccine in early 2007 for tests at international verification centers. If successful, the institute will propose to test on humans.

Vietnam has detected 93 bird flu patients, including 42 fatalities, in 32 localities since the disease started to hit the country in December 2003, the Vietnamese Health Ministry said on Nov. 21, noting that it has seen no new human cases of infections since mid-November 2005.

[Video]Alien song

See here nice animation, and several description lines.
Alien Song
Victor Navone did this a long time ago. He had an art degree, animation was new for him and he used this as a learning tool for creating animation. Instead of a mock-up of an actor or videos to create character movement he did this trial and error along with watching himself in the mirror for finer details. It took him 250 hours to complete (about a month and a half of 8-5 hrs days ). From this very video you see here, the president of Pixar contacted him and today he works full time with Pixar. He has contributed to Monsters, Inc., Finding Nemo, The Incredibles, and Cars (where he also 'produced' a State Farm video based on the movie).

[good news]No Office 2007 shutdown switch - says Microsoft

Microsoft has no immediate plans to add a controversial Windows Vista anti-piracy feature direct to its Office 2007 suite (so.. hurry), but will consider offering it as an add-on, the company said.
Microsoft revealed that although it has not built its Software Protection Platform (SPP) into Office 2007, it is considering adding it to its Office Genuine Advantage (OGA) program, a validation system that checks if a user has a legitimate copy of the software. Office 2007 was released to manufacturing earlier this month, and will ship on December 1.
Windows Vista's SPP feature requires users to activate the software with a valid activation key within 30 days of purchasing the OS (but it will be some good guy that will find a way to avoid that). If that does not happen, the OS goes into reduced functionality mode, which lets users browse the web for an hour before the system logs them out. To browse more, users must log in again, but they will only have another hour before the process repeats itself.
Office 2007 does have a product-activation feature similar to SPP. Product activation requires the system to be activated with a product key after being started 25 times. If it is not, the application will go into reduced functionality mode.
